Brushing your pet between regular professional grooming sessions is really important. Pets which are irregularly groomed tend to get matted (dead under coat starts to turn into felt) really easily.
These matts are formed when the dead undercoat starts to felt up. Regular brushing removes the dead hair before the matts start to form.
Once matts start to form (particularly under the arms and groin areas), they start to tighten up as the felting process progresses. This can cause pain and distress to animals whilst performing everyday tasks such as walking, playing or going to the toilet.
A badly matted dog is more expensive to groom because of the extra work needed to de-matt prior to the actual grooming session. Some dogs are so badly matted and in such pain that it is kinder to remove the whole coat (known as a “Shear off”). At Hair ‘n’ Houndz we really don’t like “shear off jobs” but we would prefer to do this rather than put a dog through the trauma of a lengthy painful de-matting session.
In order to ensure correct brushing of your pet, you must purchase the correct type of brush. This varies depending on your breed type. If you are unsure of what type of brush to purchase for your pet, you can e-mail us at the Hair ‘n’ Houndz Free Advice Link below and we’ll gladly tell you which type of brush you need.
